2016 Year End Letter
Dear Fellow Horseshoe Scout Reservation Alum,
As we approach the end of 2016, it gives me great pleasure to report on how we continue to fulfill our mission:
"to preserve and promote the spirit and heritage of Horseshoe Scout Reservation and its camps (Camp Horseshoe and Camp John H. Ware, III), to be a benefactor to the Reservation and to promote the brotherhood of Scouting among the alumni of the Reservation."
In the area of promoting the spirit and heritage of the camps, the History Segment program we introduced a few years ago continues to attract interest and we gave out another 500 patch segments (pictured at left) in 2016. Scouts and Scouters can earn the segment at camp any time of year by researching and answering one of our camp history quizzes. In addition to being the source for many of the quiz answers, our ever-growing Virtual Museum contains a treasure trove of artifacts and is sure to bring back fond memories.
As a benefactor, we continue to lead and fund numerous projects, both large and small. In 2016, it was largely a year of adding finishing touches to previous projects and making plans for our next large-scale project. Among the larger projects of 2016, we added drainage, brought in more topsoil, overseeded, and planted trees in the Camp Horseshoe Picnic grove. Elsewhere, we repainted the gateways at Camps Horseshoe and Ware that HSRAA originally built as our first-ever project in 2001! Looking ahead, we are currently developing plans for a new pavilion in the Picnic Grove and a restoration and enhancement project at Agheketum Circle. I hope to be able to report on our progress next year.
Finally, we continue fostering brotherhood with our annual reunions. The 2016 event was another great one with over 90 attendees. The reunions page has a recap of this and past reunions.
In closing, I ask that you please consider making a contribution to declare your membership for 2017 and support our efforts. Contributions are tax deductible and will go primarily towards our projects. To contribute online or by mail, please go to the HSRAA registration page.
As always, I invite you to contact me with any questions or comments or if you’d like to get more involved in our organization.
Yours in Scouting,
HSRAA Chairman, Class of ’73
